R.I.S.K. (c) 1987 The Edge
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the planet Christon 3, an important space weapons research centre, has been
attacked by unidentified alien beings. The boffins working there have gone into
hiding, and the projects under development remain hidden in underground tunnels...

You are responding to a Rapid Intercept Seek and Kill order, and are dropped onto
the planet in an armoured Surface Skimmer at the remaining safe area — Homebase.
Here, you can access the computers to change the colour of the ship, border and map.
Selecting the white door next to your ship takes you to be workshop, where your
ship can be upgraded.
Boarding your ship at Homebase takes you to the map screen, which is displayed as
a grid. Sectors with remaining enemy activity are displayed as black squares. You
may only enter an alien controlled sector vertically or horizontally adjacent to a
cleared sector or Homebase.

Your mission is to clear all sectors on the map of aliens.

Aliens come in different types and attack patterns. Some aliens require more hits
from your blaster than others. Their strength is often distinguished by their color.
If your ship collides with an alien or it's bullets, your ship will take damage.
If your ship cannot sustain any more damage, it will explode and the game will end.

In each sector you will have the opportunity to rescue the boffins who are running
around on the ground. They will help upgrade your ship, so it's a good idea to land
and let as many as possible climb in (be careful not to shoot them or run over them!).
However, you can only carry as many as your cargo will allow.
If your ship's cargo is full, an F will appear on your display, and you will not be
able to pick up any more.
You will have to pick up as many as you can on your first visit to each sector, else
if you leave they will presume that they have been abandoned and go permanently into
hiding.

Sometimes extra supply pods are dropped from a passing mothership, and can be picked up
when touched (be careful not to shoot them!)
Blue pod — ammo crate
Yellow pod — part crate
Green pod — instantly repairs some damage to your ship.

You can leave the current sector at any time by landing at the "empty dome“ landing pad.

When all aliens have been destroyed, the “tower dome“ landing pad becomes accessible,
and you must land here to clear the sector.
Once you have landed here to clear the sector, your ship is flown through the sector's
underground research tunnels. Each tunnel may have from one to three landing ramps. Your
ship only has one left—to—right pass to land on one of these ranps to collect additional
supplies from the ramp stores.
Each landing ramp containes a number of supplies, from ammo crates, part crates, and
research blueprints. You may only select one type of supply when landed. Typically the
later ramps down the tunnel have more supplies, but unless you know how many ranps are
available, you may miss your chance to land! Also note that in some sectors, the landing
ramp hydraulics are broken, making landing even harder!
If you fail to land on a ramp then you will immediately fly back to Homebase.

Inside the workshop at Homebase, there are four icons at the top of the screen (from the
left to right):
* Upgrade ship — will let you select from a number of ship upgrades listed below.
* Repair ship — Uses one part crate to repair some damage on your ship.
* Load ammo — Uses one ammo crate to reload your ship's ammo by 100
* Exit workshop

Each upgrade requires a certain number of [B] Boffins, [P] Part crates, and [BP] Blueprints
to activate, or upgrade to a maxinum level.
All upgrades are permanent except the shields and maintenance droid.

Thrust — Upgrades your ship's horizontal speed
Boosters — Upgrades your ship's vertical speed
Retros — Upgrades your ship's speed when changing direction
Blaster — Upgrades your ship's blaster damage
Armour — Upgrades your ship's resistance to damage
Cargo - Upgrades your ship's cargo to pick up more boffins
Shields — When switched ON, shields will provide protection from alien bullets, but will
wear out with and go OFF. The sound of bullets hitting your ship will let you
know in—game if shield are ON or not.
Maintenance droid — When switched ON, pressing SPACE in—game will fully repair your ship.
After use, the droid goes OFF. Be careful that repairs are not interrupted!
Radar — Always ON by default, this is the “Defender—esque“ radar displayed at the top of the
screen in-game. White dots show pickups. Darker dots are hostile aliens.
Anti Grav — Upgrades your ship to resist the pull of gravity and float. Does not wear OFF.

If you manage to clear all sectors on the map of aliens, then you will have succeeded in
your mission!
